Swivl – the motion tracking smartphone cameraman

swivl2

Back in the day we all assumed that the robot revolution would mean big hulking monsters clanking around in the garden, but in reality they’re turning out to be small, cute devices which do clever stuff.

Take this Swivl gadget for instance. Stick your phone into the slot, clip the transmitter to your clothing (or any object you want tracked) and the unit will automatically track you or the object while capturing the video you want. You don’t need to ask a friend to come along and film you doing your new stunts, just use one of these puppies.

The unit can pan 360 degrees and tilt up 30 degrees, so it’s pretty flexible in terms of the coverage it can give. The transmitter beams the signal up to 33 feet away and contains a microphone, so you could actually video your own Planet Earth type documentaries if you were so inclined. The unit is powered by two AA batteries (and two AAA for the transmitter) which last up to four hours.

Although the product is designed for the iPhone, it can also be used with Android handsets under 11mm thick, but there’s no app yet so the microphone won’t work. The device is priced at $199.95.
