Syncbox – turn your computer into a free personal Dropbox clone [Freeware]

syncbox

Why is it that you always need that particular missing file, when you’re nowhere near your own computer? Frustrating isn’t it? Sure there are services like Dropbox around which let you share and access your files on remote machines, but they’re based on remote services which have access to your private stuff, which can be a concern.

Now there’s a way to deliver the kind of cool access of a Dropbox, only using your own home computer instead of their central server.

They’re calling Syncbox a private cloud data center, but you and I know it’s nothing more than a cool file sharing service which uses those Internet tubes. Once you’ve downloaded and installed the free Windows server software and set up an ID for your machine, you’ll be able to access your files from any computer using the web address you’re given.

There are Syncbox clients for Android, iPhone, Linux, Windows and Mac, so you can use just about any device you have to access your files while on the go. You can also use the program to share files between people, backup and archive your important files and even stream media from device to device (including TV) if you want.

It’s clever, and while there are a growing number of programs like this out there, we liked the simplicity of setup and use that this product provides. The only bugbear we had was the glacially slow server download link which could be off-putting to those without the patience to wait to get going. Definitely worth a look.
