TENG – electricity from snow

Snow, most people are pretty annoyed when it starts falling but maybe in the future it will be a boon to our electricity bills. New device can create electricity from snowfall which may also go on to bridge the gap for solar usage in areas were it snows a lot. The triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) can make sustainable energy an option even for frozen wastelands.

This new breakthrough was relatively simple. The device is very inexpensive and it relies on the principles of static electricity. Snow has a positive charge, when faced with an element that has a negative charge, the device captures the interaction as electricity.

Early research indicates that it can be added to solar panels so that when the snow starts falling, which would usually take the panels out of commission, the TENG can jump into play and provide continuous electricity. It is still under development.
