Terrafugia Transition car-airplane hybrid is coming

It’s a car! It’s a plane! It’s a…hybrid? Back in June of 2008, we got to see a really interesting aero-auto combo that is called the Terrafugia Transition that was going to have its first round of production in 2009. Well, a few years have passed since then, and it’s looking like they’ll be making their way out later this year.

It seems as though some numbers have changed over time though. Instead of the previously estimated $148k, prices are now being guessed at $279,000, which is quite a staggering change. Classified as a Light Sport Aircraft, and simultaneously being a vehicle, you will need both a drivers license, and a Sport Pilot License. The latter translates to about 20 hours of flight time, and passing a practical test. Can you imagine flying part way to your destination, and instead of being stuck at an airport, simply landing and driving the rest of the way?
