Tesla Torch – amazing DIY flashlight gives 1 min of light for every 1 second of hand cranking

If you’ve ever tried to use a hand crank flashlight, you will know that they’re a) very cool but b) a real pain, because you need to keep cranking the handle until your arm drops off to get any decent amount of run time out of the LED bulbs. But now some very clever chap has come up with a superb 3D printed DIY solution.

This Tesla Torch can be made on any ordinary 3D printer, and delivers a superb 1 minute of light for every second of hand cranking, thanks to some clever electrical engineering. It’s pretty neat, and even more so, since the developer has released the how to video and build plans openly for anyone to copy.

He also occasionally sells the prototypes on eBay to fund more development, but right now they’re all out of stock, so it’s back to a soldering iron and some patient fiddling around. Oh and a 3D printer of course. Surely it can’t be long before someone crowdfunds this and opens it up to the market?
