TetraBIN – the trash can that can help stop littering by playing video games

TetraBIN in use

Fact: If something is presented as a game, no matter how boring it is, people will be way more likely to do it. Laundry? Nope! A sorting game? Yeah, I can do that. TetraBIN is a trash bin that turns not littering into a very real game you and your friends can play. That game is Tetris.

The trash bins react to what size and shape trash you throw away and when you toss it in relation to the game. Obviously, one person cannot connect a full line on their own so it encourages others to join in and toss their rubbish as well. Together, people are able to form the lines to play the game.

TetraBIN alone

The idea here is to turn throwing away trash from a passive activity that we may or may not do into a very deliberate act and draw more attention to how and why we throw things away. The trash bins are made from 900 LED lights and six custom sensors that allow people to play the game. This isn’t designed for consumer use, instead it’s meant to be installed in cities. How cool would it be to play a game of Tetris with your empty coffee cup and everyone else that happens to walk by?
