The Sun card.

Sunallinonecard

The All-in-One Card. One geek’s dream concept of a Sun powered (literally and figuratively!) credit card thin PDA. Before you dismiss it as total fantasy, just remember how far we’ve come in only a few years in terms of portability and functionality.

It only needs a small processor that does nothing but send the touch and other inputs to a server, and the server sends the display and sound back. Since all the storage is on a server, it gives you virtually unlimited storage for your data, pictures and songs.

  • Yes, I am longing for one of these. People are talking about the new super do-everything mobile phones, but it doesn’t make sense to hold your valuable data store in your hand when it could be safely in an inside pocket while you work with lightweight peripherals that talk to it bluetooth-style.

The “one data store” (lifedrive if Palm hadn’t hijacked the name) can have fierce security built in and backing-up should be simple. A card PDA like this, a headset for phone and music, a tiny camera that clips on the PDA to use its display, and for major work a roll-up screen for a monitor and a projected virtual keyboard (OK, maybe a small folding keyboard). Heaven compared with the weight I lug about ever day, and less chance of expensive damage.

Roll on the day! How far away do people think it is? I am hoping that the next PDA I get will be my last conventional one.

  • Xandra, I’ll be happy as long as I don’t lose it down the back of the couch the first time I get it out. :-)
