theQ – the world’s first waterproof social camera shares your photos instantly with in-built 3G

Hmm…now here’s interesting. This brand new theQ camera aims to replace your smartphone as the camera of choice by offering instant uploads to social networks using in integrated 3G wireless networking. Which basically means you should be able to do instant uploads from just about any place on earth. Which is fascinating.

One of the goals of all citizen journalism is to grab the photo-story and get it where it needs to be instantly, and now there’s a way to do it, which doesn’t endanger your smartphone. Just whip out a theQ (weird name) and shoot and post in one move.

We’re slightly concerned that the images are all possibly going to be Instagrammed on their way through the camera’s processor, but it’s probably a small price to pay for the convenience. The specs seem fairly decent (f2.4 wide angle lens, 2GB internal memory) although we’re not told of the actual resolution of the unit, which is worrying.

We do like the ring flash idea though, although again, the proof of its effectiveness will come from the quality of the images that actually emerge from the gloom and darkness. It’s waterproof to 3 meters, has a self-timer, and comes with one month’s free 3G service, after which you have to pay £3.50 a month to use it.

It’s priced at a somewhat heavyweight £149.99 though, so we’ll wait and see if people other than activists on the front line of the war against the .1% are prepared to shell out for the gimmick. Definitely interesting though.
