TheWorld Browser – superb new web browser defines new era in software development?

Theworldbrowser

TheWorld Browser is a freeware web browser from software developers Phoenix Studio. Ho-hum I hear you say. Yeah well get this. It runs off the Internet Explorer engine, fits into a 566 KB file (!) available in either standard or no install versions and is about 3 times as fast as Firefox or *any other browser* I’ve ever used. What’s really astonishing is the fact that it is fully featured, no cut down compromises here.

  • Tabbed interface with sophisticated and complete customisation on tab actions.
  • Incredibly compact – loads into around 13KB of memory on start.
  • Supports plugins, auto-form filling, proxies, mouse gestures, hot-keys etc etc etc
  • Integrated safe surfing function protects against malevolent web sites.
  • Pop-up killer etc
  • Save As Image saves web pages as .png for offline access.
  • Alternative thumbnail view of site tabs
  • Skins

The list goes on. I’ve been looking for a super fast alternative to Firefox for a long time. I love Firefox of course, but sometimes I need to fire up a browser and surf FAST without all that load up time etc. I used to use Off By One but this program just blows it away.

The most amazing thing is that Phoenix is a Chinese software house based in Beijing. I’m betting it’s not that big either. If these guys can produce a world class – and I mean world class – web browser in what looks like just over 24 months, what does it say for the likes of Microsoft which has been struggling with a gazillion programmers to produce something like the bloated IE 7.x?

Oh sure there are glitches, the safety surf functions tend to break a few sites (I haven’t figured out how to custom tune it properly yet) and the thing leaks memory like a flatulent bulldog. Leave it open for any length of time with multiple tabs open to see what I mean. But these are small and fixable things in comparison to the superb whole. It’s just such a shame that it’s built around the IE engine and therefore a Mac or Linux port is unlikely, otherwise this would be a contender for the best web browser, period.

Awesome, and if this is an example of what Chinese software development holds out for the future, then wow…better start dumping those Msoft shares fast.

TheWorld Browser is a tiny, fast, yet free, secure and powerful web browser. It features a tabbed interface with multi-threaded frame browser. TheWorld Browser is uses the Microsoft Internet Explorer engine. We currently support Windows 98/me/2000/xp/Vista. TheWorld Browser 2.0 has a new, powerful multi-threaded window frame, which prevents the browser from freezing. Even if one webpage is unresponsive, the rest will not be affected. In developing TheWorld Browser 2.0, we have rewritten and rebuilt all the codes and modules from version 1.x. The new framework is built to provide you with richer internet browsing experience.
