We’re trying hard not to get a little paranoid here, but should we be worried that some major retailers, both on and offline, are now openly stocking what they’re calling emergency food storage products? Yes yes, we know that emergencies happen all the time, but when you start pushing them in larger packs, that could be worrying.

Take for example this Thrive One Year Food Pack from Costco, which provides enough freeze dried powdered food to feed one person for a year, and at a cost of $0.16c per serving. Let’s leave aside for a moment the nutritional and health benefits or otherwise of freeze dried powdered food, and just think about why you would need a year’s worth of emergency grub in your cupboard.

The food comes in a delightfully colored set of options, from canned vegetables, fruits, meats and even desserts, and you can even buy beautifully designed 72 inch racks which are designed to help you store and rotate your foodstuffs to provide optimal shelf life and convenience. And when you remember that this stuff lasts for between 3 and 25 years a can, you’re talking a lot of convenience here folks.

Now you may call us old fashioned, but food for us means grating, chopping, pulling, squeezing and slicing. Nowhere in that dictionary is there much scooping involved, but to listen to the words from the lady in the video below, you’d think this was Michelin star cuisine in a tin. We’ve reported recently on the new geek food under development called Soylent, perhaps this is just the same thing done different?

Whatever the situation, we’re hoping we’re never called upon to open up a can of powdered beef and chilli stew, because at that point we’re thinking that things might not be so awesome down on our neighborhood watch. Anyhoo, the price for all this food is $1499.99, including shipping and handling.

Take a look at the recipe below and see what you think. Yum!?
