Tickr – the latest news on your desktop with a click [Freeware]

If you’re one of those who prides themselves on being news junkies and keeping up to date with all the latest happenings around the world we’d like to offer up a new, exciting technology which could transform your life. OK, so not exactly new. Or transformational. More like informational. But still cool.

We’re talking about a nice little freeware tool called Tickr, which takes ordinary RSS feeds and delivers them to your computer desktop in a nice compact stream of info. We’re constantly amazed when we read about the ‘death of RSS’ because it’s such a cool technology and a fabulous way to get the updated content of websites delivered direct to your eyes with zero hassle.

This cross platform open source program basically turns your monitor screen into a CNN type ticker tape, using your choice of RSS news information scrolling in real time across the desktop. You get a bunch of customization options, including ‘always on top’, font size, opacity and position of the stream etc, and you can also import OPML standard feeds from your existing RSS sources.

In practice we found it a little difficult to set up, since the wizards are not very clear and there’s no obvious ‘add a feed’ button anywhere that we could see. But the good thing is the software comes with some feeds already configured out of the box, and once you get the hang of those defaults the rest falls into place. It’s a cool little tool, and if you need it, you’re going to love it.

  • Sounds like Pointcast.

  • Oh wow, I forgot all about them. Distant memory, eh?
