Transit App – great little app for navigating your city transport [Freeware]

If there’s one thing that smartphones are starting to excel at it’s connecting travelers to information which makes their journey’s easier. From airline schedules and boarding to satnav functionality, having this sort of data in your pocket is incredibly useful. And no more so than with public urban transport, or the how to get from A to B best.

We’ve mentioned Citymapper in the past, but now there’s a new pretender to the crown, and it’s a great little app all round. Transit App, available for both iOS and Android, connects up the different transport options in your immediate area, and instantly gives you a plan for how to get to a destination quicker, cheaper or easier.

But it’s not just the base functionality that makes it worthwhile, it’s the way it does it. The simple scroll to view makes it a cinch to check which buses, trains or even Uber cabs are nearby to ferry you to your desire. No digging down through major menus, just fire up and you’re right in the action.

If you want to do a proper route plan, it’s also a breeze. And within seconds you can be viewing your options on a clear, easy to read screen of icons and minimal text. It’s hard to explain why it’s so cool, but once you use it, you’ll understand. Everything is around one button press away from your eyes, which makes it a joy to use on the go. Especially if you’ve got limited data speed on your phone.

For example, we love the route box which says, ‘from here‘ or ‘to here‘ complete with helpful little arrow icons. It’s a tiny thing, but it means you don’t have to think, just press to get a result. The app is currently available in around half a dozen countries, and judging by the wish list, there’s work being done on adding a bunch more. Great app, beautifully done.
