TransMaker Redux – device which converts your Galaxy S3/S4 phone to a tablet gets a price and goes for crowdfunding [Video]

Last month we reported on an innovative piece of tech which was designed to convert your standard Samsung Galaxy S3 or S4 smartphone into a 10.1 inch tablet computer and it got a lot of interest from around the web. To say the least. Well the company behind the project has decided to go for crowdfunding via Indiegogo and they’ve released a better video, specs and pricing.

The TransMaker, as it’s now simply called, actually looks pretty neat, and when you see it in higher resolution video form (see below), you get to understand the whole concept a lot better. What we particularly like about the idea, is the fact that the tablet dock unit actually doubles up as an extra battery for your phone.

So not only do you get the advantage of a bigger screen on demand, but also a longer running time for games and apps etc. Clever. The pricing also looks to be pretty good too, with a retail of $179 for the 10.1 version and $219 for the 11 inch model. The thing to note is these tablets will benefit from the processing power of the phone, so they’re pretty high spec.

If you pre-order via their crowdfunding page you can get the 10.1 inch for $99 (plus shipping) which is even better. They’re obviously using the crowdfunding to do some volume ordering to get a lower manufactured cost, which is to be expected.

Our only real caveat is how the company will cope with the rapid pace of new phone launches from Samsung, which will make the S3/S4 less relevant over time. Hopefully they’ll be able to offer upgrades to cope with newer models. Remember though, you do take risks by using crowdfunding services to order products, no matter how cool they may be.

  • It’s been removed from Indiegogo because of a patent dispute. How come there’s no follow up on this story anywhere? There must be a lot of people like me who’ve ordered a transmaker wondering whether we’ll see either the goods or a refund.

    • fucking Asus those greedy bastards. I’d have bought the padfone if it didn’t cost more than my S3 and my HPTP.

    • Latest from Migoal is that they’ve been instructed by Indiegogo to refund everyone who’s ordered. I’ll be relieved to get my money back but feel very sorry for Migoal. I don’t claim to understand the legal issues but this product seems different enough to be allowed to go ahead.

    • I wish there was a way to order them directly this seems like a sweet idea Asus Padfone is way too expensive plus the Padfone coming state-side has very mediocre specs compared to the S3.

  • Quote from a Migoal exec: “But we will never give up,we are now develop new items based on different
technology to promote the trend of phone-powered computing.”
