Turn your cell phone into a universal door key with an ECKey Bluetooth Access Control Unit

Ever lost a set of door keys? Annoying isn’t it? Even scrambling around for your keys in pocket or handbag or with arms full of groceries can be a real pain. When it comes down to it, keys aren’t really that user friendly, and they have a nasty habit of not being where they should be when you need them most.

Enter the ECKey Bluetooth Control Unit, which lets you use your mobile phone as a universal key for any kind of electronic lock. Once you’ve installed the little black box, your door will automatically unlock for you when you get within range as long as you’re carrying your Bluetooth phone with you. You can even set it up to unlock your car doors with the right fitting. If the idea of automatic unlocking is too frightening, you can set it up to open only once you’ve entered a PIN number on your phone, and there’s even an Android app available to help out.

The company is marketing the tool as suitable for garage doors, gates, home alarm systems (it can activate and deactivate alarm systems in the same way) and cars, but the bottom line is if you have an electronic door lock, then you can use this system as a remote access key. The unit is priced at $227.96, which doesn’t include the electronic lock which can be purchased separately for $29.99.
