I’m all about repurposing old gadgets into another useful device. There’s just something about breathing new life into old electronics that is just fun. One way you can do this is by taking your old car stereo that you’ve upgraded, and turning it into your home stereo system. Obviously you aren’t going to be able to just set it on your shelf and plug in some speakers. It takes a bit more work, which is outlined in this guide.
This is one of those projects that only makes sense if you have most of the necessary parts already, and don’t want to spend money on buying something new. In this case, you’ll probably want to already have a car stereo, a set of car speakers and a power supply. You can make housing for the speakers without too much trouble, and if you’ve already upgraded your stereo, there’s a good chance you already have the necessary wire and tools. This would definitely be a good way to add some nice sound to your garage, as you usually want the nicer setup to go in your living room.
Years ago I "re-purposed" a gen 1 external cd drive (the kind that you have to used with a cartridge) for use in one of my home stereo systems….at the time you could get them anywhere for next to nothing. Still working great, maybe 10 years now.
I am still using my old car stereo in my garage to play my old cassettes. I t still works great.
