Upcylced Runway – show takes aim at the waste in the fashion industry

Fashion is a major contributor to waste and pollution. It’s not just old clothing ending up in landfills, it’s also the textile manufacturing process. It uses a ton of water and creates a ton of waste. It’s just really hard on the environment. To bring awareness, two students are showing upcyled clothing on the runway.

There are three R’s, reuse, reduce, and recycle. We tend to only focus on the last one but Marcus Rudd and Alice Wilby, the masterminds behind this project, want to draw more attention to the other two parts. With clothing, recycling isn’t really a thing (and some attempts to do so have just caused other issues) so the real key is using what you own as long as possible.

Reducing plastics and car use get a lot of attention but honestly, the fashion industry is really doing a number on the environment and by being more thoughtful of the clothes we put on our backs, we can do a lot to help.
