Use freeware to clear up some disk space on your computer

I remember the hard drive of my first computer. It held a whopping 500MB of data, and to many at the time, it seemed like more space than one could ever need. These days you’ll get a new computer with a hard drive that can hold several hundred gigs, and yet still manage to fill it up. The worst part is when you realize that you aren’t even sure what is taking up a nice chunk of that space. Well, the truth is that you could free up a lot of room, if you only knew where to look.

There are a couple great pieces of freeware out there that’s designed to help out out of the bind I described above. SpaceSniffer and CCleaner know all of the right places to find files that you very likely don’t need to keep around. These include things like temporary files, and files you haven’t used in over a year. There’s a great guide here that can show you how to make the most of these programs, and free up some valuable drive space on your computer.

  • The first computer I owned had NO hard disk space – if you wanted to save anything then it had to be on a floppy (really floppy) disk or a data tape!
And the first computer I worked on was the size of a small room and worked from 35mm magnetic tape using masses of valves to switch the switches!

    • Ahhh…those were the days, eh Hazel? :)
