Virtual Reality Treadmill lets you pretend you’re outside

There are some things in life that most of us thought only existed in movies, like those insane gadgets James Bond uses. Virtual reality is one such technology that we still haven’t perfected. But that doesn’t stop companies from using the term very loosely, as with this treadmill.

The Virtual Reality Treadmill comes with a $2,000 price tag, but has several worthwhile functions for those who don’t like to exercise outside. While I don’t expect everyone to jump up to buy this thing, it still has a pretty interesting concept. It uses a treadmill that raises or lowers itself to simulate whatever terrain you’re looking at on the tv in front of you. Be it the hills, city streets, or trails of Northern Italy or the southwestern United States, there is a view for you. There are dual 5-watt speakers to make your experience more real, and the video will speed up and slow down to match your pace. There are 15 workout programs, an integrated heart monitor, and a cushioned running surface to ease joint impact. Of course, just going for a jog outside is completely free.

  • The tech looks slightly more interesting than I initially imagined. If you could combine it with Google Maps and street view to take a walk or run anywhere in the world (that has been mapped, of course) that would be very cool.

Another idea would be connecting it up to a network and then running races inside virtual stadiums.

I started reading this post as a cynic and now I'm a bit of a convert, looking at a virtual street go past seems like a lot more fun in the gym than staring at my sweaty face in the mirror bouncing along on the treadmill.
