In the future, all of our chairs will be plastic and made by 3D printers. Well, probably not but the prototype for the VoxelChair v1.0 gives us a glimpse of what the possibilities are. The chair was 3D printed in plastic with one, very long thread.
The video shows us the surprisingly calming process of printing the chair. The finished product looks like something from a science fiction set from afar. Almost as it was built out of crystal. Up close though you can see the slightly less severe points of it.
The project is a collaboration between Bartlett’s Design Computation Lab and Nagmi Design. It’s a really interesting project and the company is releasing a full line of them at Milan Design Week this year. Of course, there still a question of how these chairs will hold up over time as even plastic breaks down. Still, it’s a neat project. Check out the video to see how it was done.
