With climate change a reality, what will the future look like on an urban level? This short story gives one hopeful vision of that future. Although the world wasn’t able to stop the changes our choices and practices have caused, there is some hope.
The woman of this future doesn’t drive or fly, food is expensive, and no one eats meat but she is able to live with freedom. There is greater reliance on sustainable living and over all she feels good. But the world is still a mess. A vision of the future where cities act but countries do not.
Although this story is obviously science fiction, some of it is indeed possible and we’re already seeing plans in places like New York and Mexico City that are meant to prepare their urban landscapes for the coming changes. The story may not be reality yet but it or something close could be in the later half of this century.
