When Making Masks, Material Is Everything – not all fabric performs the same

You may have recently dragged out your sewing machine to make masks. This is fine and helpful, make extra for donation if you can! Give them to neighbors and other family members. Help people out! But make sure you’re using the right type of fabric for the job.

Not all fabric is created equal. Some is much better than others at blocking germs from getting through. No mask you make will be up to the standard of medical equipment but it can go a long way to keeping you more protected all the same. Your best bet is to go with heavier weight cotton fabrics and to make it double layered.

Avoid knit and stretchy fabrics as these are designed to breathe and you don’t want moisture to be able to easily make it through the barrier. That means those tutorials for leggings and and socks are no gos. Also avoid cotton t-shirts for the same reasons. Happy crafting!
