Wind turbines create a renewable source of energy but it turns out their blades are not easily dealt with when they’ve reached the end of their life and end up in landfills. The race is on to discover a sustainable way to handle these giant blades.
Turbine blades are huge. Some are the size of football fields and they must be cut into pieces to be moved. They are not easy to transport and there are very few things that can be done to the fiberglass to make them useful for other industries. One is to crush them down and make tiles for floors and walls.
Otherwise, the blades are buried under the landfills, forever. They are not unearthed later or moved. They’re stuck in the ground and just, stay there. Until a more sustainable method is adopted, this will be the way that the blades are handled.
