Yahoo shuts down video hosting service

Today is a sad day for Yahoo Video users. It seems that the company has admitted defeat to the mighty YouTube. According to a statement from Yahoo, they will no longer be accepting video uploads from users. This is one of those occasions where I sheepishly admit that I didn’t even realize Yahoo was still doing video uploads. Seriously, I can’t recall a time where I considered either uploading or searching for a video with the former king of search engines.

Yahoo hasn’t stated any specific reasons for shutting down their video service. What they did say is that the company is providing software that will allow you to download the content you’ve previously uploaded, so that you can archive it, and upload it elsewhere. You’ll have until March 11th of next year to grab those videos. They were also kind enough to point users to Flickr (which is Yahoo-owned) for their video hosting needs. Perhaps this is simply an effort to consolidate services.
