YubiKey – It does not really work on Mac… [REVIEW]

I was pretty excited to test out the YubiKey 4 and YubiKey 4 Nano, but it turned out that the main feature I was looking for, wasn’t included.

PROS

  • Very small
  • Very cheap
  • Neat idea

CONS

  • Does not work to log into your Mac (you need to fill in a pin instead, but what’s the advantage of that?)
  • Very difficult and long process to setup (don’t tell me I don’t know anything about PC’s or Mac’s, it was very difficult, promised!)
  • It just doesn’t work as I expected/intended

VERDICT

You would think that such a small neat thing you can put into your USB would work as a replacement for your Mac-password? No it doesn’t. Not for me at least. I tried installing this so I could login to my Mac by just pressing the YubiKey (you could see it like a key you’d use to open your door), but that did not work at all. In fact: in generated a very long and random password, containing a lot of letters (see the video). I guess these YubiKeys can do different things, like logging in to Gmail or Dropbox, but the most useful thing: logging into your pc, where you have to fill in your password every day for at least 10 times, was not featured. A bit disappointing, but I still hope I did something wrong when installing this thing
