$10 Smartphone To Digital Microscope Conversion [How To]

There’s something really cool about looking at the world through a microscope. The tiny little bits and pieces that make up our universe, seen at a magnification that makes everything so alien. It’s no wonder that this is the part of science that most people enjoy the most. The problem is it can be rather expensive to buy the equipment you need to play with the miniature world, which is why this cheap alternative how-to hack impresses us so much.

The $10 Smartphone To Digital Microscope Conversion is an Instructables project that lets you build a simple, cheap microscope for your smartphone camera using nothing more complex than some clear plexiglass, nuts and bolts and the lens from a cheapo laser pointer which you can get on eBay for around $3.00.

What particularly appeals to us is the fact that you don’t even need lots of complex tools or skills, it’s mostly a matter of drilling a few holes, and arranging the plexiglass correctly to ensure the lens gives the sharpest definition. The demo video below shows how it’s done and you can get magnifications up to 175x which is rather impressive indeed. And for $10, it’s a steal. Enjoy.
