The first image from the James Webb Space Telescope has arrived and it’s an absolute beauty. Up above we’ve created a little montage to give you an idea of how sensational this new piece of equipment is. Top left is the new deep space image from the Webb. Top right is the famous Hubble deep space image taken a few years ago. You can immediately see the difference in resolution of the two images. The Webb version is bursting with ‘life’ and shapes, and you’re not even seeing the full resolution version here (obviously). At the bottom of the montage is a close up of one portion of the web image, just to show how clear and precise the image resolution is. Bear in mind that you are looking at galaxies here which are billions of years old. Incredible. To view and download the high resolution Webb image now, visit this link.
[Edit – adding a link to a very good, if super technical, review of the new image: https://bigthink.com/starts-with-a-bang/webb-first-science/]
