PLX Kiwi – engine and driving monitor helps improve your mpg by up to 33%, or your carbon back…

The PLX Kiwi is an engine and driving monitor device which helps you save fuel by displaying your fuel consumption live as you drive. It also displays a scorecard which lets you know if you’re driving properly and responsibly (i.e. in Drive Green Mode) by accelerating smoothly, avoiding harsh braking etc etc. We’re a little concerned about the training mode, because we have visions of people peering myopically at the screen while crashing spectacularly into the nearest tree. But hey, what do we…

Counterfeit Money Detector – new gizmo promises to stop thief and get you rich

This Chinese Counterfeit Money Detector goes some way beyond your normal version and offers not only UV light scanning but also magnetic detection which checks the note for the thin metal wire that should be buried in there somewhere. Unless you’re in poor old Zimbabwe of course, where you simply don’t have time to check the currency before it’s lost another 20% in value.  This very portable and useful system uses 2 different technologies in order to detect the counterfeit…

Most Accurate Geek Clocks – time brought down to earth by technology

So you think your timepiece is accurate eh? Well take a look at this trio of clocks, a ‘scope model, a Nixie and a Flip model all hooked up to some sort of frighteningly obtuse geek equipment array which results in accuracy of a few nano-seconds a day. Er…how much time did they waste on this again…?  Here, the Nixie clock is driven by a KVARZ CH1-75 Active Hydrogen Maser (5 MHz) through a HP 3325B synthesizer (60 Hz) through…

Toyota Winglet – Segway killer or jumped up roller skate?

The unveiling of the new Toyota Winglet electric personal transport device  last week must have sent shudders coursing down the back of Segway investors everywhere. Built in partnership with Sony’s robot division, the new concept looks infinitely more appealing than the clunky Segway, although it does suffer from a number of performance limitations. For a start it can only move at a maximum of 6 kph and the range is a measly 10 km (compared to the Segway’s 38 km range and 20…

UseeIsee Picture Fone – unlimited videophone calls to any landline or cell phone in the USA

The UseeIsee Picture Fone combines the webcam loveliness of the PC with the price sensitivity of Skype to give you free user to user global video calls without a computer and unlimited calls to landlines and mobile phones in North America for a flat fee of $39.95. OK, so it’s not doing anything that Skype can’t, but it is infinitely more grandma friendly. No hunting around for the headphones, mouse dialling or fiddling with audio settings. Just plug it into your broadband modem and off…

Pi 8 Speed Electric Bicycle – one red hot chilli pepper to go…

The Pi 8 Speed Electric Bicycle may look odd, but the specs say cool cool cool. You can either use it in full electric mode, and go for 30 miles at up to 20 mph or switch it to pedal assist (pedalec) and increase your range to 100 miles with a 3 to 5 hour re-charge. We’re talking 1500 mpg equivalent from the Lithium Ion batteries buried in the tube frame. Designed by Marcus Hayes in San Francisco, it’s the type of…

Microsoft’s Sphere – cool touch controlled interface looks to the future

Microsoft Sphere. I’m a little behind the curve on this one, but my dear daughter pointed out how cool this was and I’ve got to agree. The dudes at Microsoft have taken a very cool product called the Magic Planet digital video globe (below) and added touch navigation to it using an infrared camera and some software smarts. They’re figuring it could be useful for things like omni-directional video conferencing or multimedia browsing, and the videos certainly make it look a…

Musicshake moves – updates Facebook, ringtones and more…

The guys from Musicshake have done some interesting upgrade work. You can now export your tunes to Facebook or Imeem and even create a ringtone, which must make it the best ringtone maker on the market. I’ve uploaded my Trails track to Imeem (you need to be logged in) which is fun. I still think this is one of the funnest music applications on the web. Tags: musicshake, music+maker, ringtone+maker
