If you’re one of those who are convinced that smartphone photos are destined to forever remain washed out, blurry, flash destroyed disasters, think again. The latest breed of high resolution phone cameras has spurred on a new generation of apps designed to take advantage of all that lovely power and glory.
These free apps promise to banish bad flash day and herald a new dawn of sophisticated DSLR functionality which almost – but not quite – could be mistaken for professional grade imaging. And it’s only going to get better folks. Just to prove it, here’s our round-up ofsome of the coolest photo apps for the Android platform we’ve used recently. If you have any favorites we’ve missed, add them to the comments.
We all make mistakes, especially when we’re trying to capture those unforgettable moments on camera. Animals and people in the wrong place, that pesky car driving past, the annoying photo-bomber. Well now you can remove the problem with a stroke of a finger. This cool little app lets you delete items at will, and automatically replaces them with a suitable clone of the background, so there’s no sign of the original and it looks seamless. Great way to disappear people and things.
2. After Focus
One of the reallyneat things you get from using a proper DSLR camera, apart from superb light handling, is the ability to deliver the kind of depth of field that real pros use all the time. Smartphone cameras just can’t do that by default, but this great app gives you the power to tweak your focus and DOF to get exactly the result you want. The controls are super easy to use, the program does most of the work for you and the results are excellent.
3. Fix Photo
Ever got home and excitedly downloaded your photos only to discover they’ve got the dreaded blurries? More vacations are probably ruined by blurry photos than anything else (including dodgy foreign food), so this app could be a real treasure. Just import your sad image, move the slider until you reach your desired sharpness and save. It won’t fix every blurry image, but it can retrieve moderately blurred photos quite well. It also features a noise reduction function for photos which suffer from the low light speckles.
What good’s a phone camera if you can’t have fun with it now and again, and that’s where this groovy little app really shines. The name of the program gives it away, but it doesn’t do justice to the quality of the real time results you get as you snap away with your favorite settings. The app comes with six cartoon/sketch effects and you get adjustable sliders to enhance or decrease the impact. This is one of those smartphone apps that is guaranteed to impress your friends and relatives, especially if they still think mobile phones are just for texting.
5. PowerGIF
Love ’em or hate them, GIF animated images are fun to make and can be even more fun to view. Which is why good GIF making programs are a treat, and this one is no exception. The design of the user interface is top notch, which meansyou can quickly and easily pick a set of photos and combine them into fun animations in a matter of moments. You can choose images from your gallery, or shoot them live with the camera and in both cases the results are excellent.
