If you want to go surfing, you know that wind is going to play a major part in how good the waves are. Even if you pull up a weather app on your phone, you’re likely not going to get the most accurate reading for when you reach the shore. You could always go out and take your chances, but why bother if you can know for certain one way or the other?
The Shaka is at bare minimum, a wind meter for your iPhone that plugs into your 3.5mm jack. However, when it comes out sometime around this fall, it will be quite a bit more than that. It can currently measure meters per second for wind speed, but will be able to support knots, metric system units, imperial units, and more. Seeing as there is a built-in thermometer, you’ll be able to tell the wind chill as well. Special sensors will be added in later that will also be able to detect humidity. At the present, it will only be available for iPhones and iPad, but by launch date it will hopefully be supported by Android and other smartphone platforms. No word on pricing just yet, but that will surely come in the following months leading up to its release.
