Make Your Own Stereogram – amaze friends and family with your very own optical magic

Stereograms are probably the earliest form of 3D image, discovered by some English dude in 1838. The images are actually more about depth perception than true 3D, but when you view them properly they can really be fun. The pleasure comes from finally seeing the hidden pattern, so the thrill is in the skill, if you see what I mean.

This free Easy Stereogram Builder is an easy to use stereogram generator which lets you select from a range of backgrounds and masks to create your very own stereogram which you can download on to your computer for viewing at your leisure.

You can upload and use your own backgrounds if you want, and also create stereograms with text (first one to tell me what the word is above in the comments gets a bonus point) which makes for some interesting results all round. To view the results and get the full ‘wow’ effect, you’ll need to practice de-focusing your eyes and slowly bringing them back into focus while staring at the image. Or you can just try out these tips and tricks.

If you’re happy to register and log in, you’ll also be able to store your stereograms and make them public on the site for everyone to enjoy.
