Amazon 3D Printing Store – suddenly 3D printing isn’t a fad any more

Anyone who thought that 3D printing was purely a trendy fad, which would fade away once people got bored with it, should perhaps pop on over to the brand new Amazon 3D Printing Store. When the world’s largest online retailer dedicates a whole section to a new category like this, it’s time to sit up and take notice. You have been told.

The new section offers a raft of products, ranging from the printers themselves to 3rd party services which will print off custom items according to your desires.

Right now the population of products is, as you would expect, fairly basic, with things like coffee cup sleeves and cookie cutters on show, but there are definitely glimpses of the future lurking in the deeper recesses of the catalog. For example you can order your own GoPro camera mount for a scuba mask, as well as the odd lampshade and vase.

It’s going to be really interesting to watch this section explode with products and services once the technology starts to settle down, and costs reduce. We expect to see a huge number of spare parts for common household items, full fledged items such as kitchen utensils and gadgets, and even car parts start to appear in volume. And of course custom made services for those special gifts. This is one technology that’s definitely going to run and run.
