We love it when clever people come up with clever uses of basic technology, and this is one of those cases. The #X campaign has a very simple, but powerful message – don’t text while you drive. There are more teenage road deaths caused by texting while driving than anything else, so this is a hugely valuable initiative. And it’s simple to do.
All you have to do is take the #X pledge, and send off a #X tweet to your friends to let them know you’re just about to start driving and can’t respond until you arrive. Then leave your phone alone. Over five million people have already taken the pledge, which is a great way to improve safety on the roads, and the more people get involved the more powerful the idea becomes.
There are enough sad stories to go around, so we won’t repeat them aloud here, but suffice to say – to quote the campaign slogan – ‘no text is worth a life’. It would also help if there were more apps like ATT’s DriveMode, which switches off the phone texting and calling functions while it’s on. Until that time, remember, it can wait.
