The Dom’Up Treehouse – good for the environment but tough on your wallet

Dom'Up 1

If you love the idea of a treehouse and want something innovative and easy on the environment, Dom’Up could fit the bill. This “life tree platform” – invented by Dutch arboriculturist Bruno de Grunne and architect Nicolas d’Ursel from Trees and People – takes the best of tree camping and utilizes Trees and People’s No Trace arboreal hanging system.

With its low impact on surrounding trees, Dom’Up is made from galvanized steel and natural wooden flooring. It comes with a UV-resistant double canvas tent shelter, protective roofing made from durable thermo-welded tarpaulin, a large terrace and an open interior space that can be used for a bedroom or living space. An external railing has been flat fitted around the shelter for additional security. Dom’Up’s wooden floorboards can be removed during wintertime or the rainy season, then reinstalled just in time for spring enjoyment. According to de Grunne, it takes as little as two days to be fully installed and can stay in the trees for years. The ropes and straps of the Dom’Up, however, will need to be replaced every 5 years in accordance with European safety standards.

It looks like it could be loads of fun. But there’s a catch. Be prepared to shell out €25,000 (US $28,215) for this baby, including installation. Still, if you can spring for it, it could be a great getaway or even a fun and unique rental. Outdoors and under the stars, for a fee. Why not?
