There’s nothing worse than finding yourself stranded with a dead camcorder or digital camera battery when you’re on your vacation or travels and trying to capture the moment. Sure you can trudge back to the hotel and use the standard mains battery charger than comes with your camera, but it’s a real hassle. But now there’s another option which lets you charge up the battery from any handy USB source – laptop, battery block, solar charger etc.
The CamCaddy 2 is a universal camera battery charger which features one very cool ability, you can charge just about all camcorder or DSLR batteries from a conventional USB source. Yep, no more having to grab a special adapter. We tested it out to see just how effective it is, and came away impressed. See our video below to see how it works.
The product comes in a standard package, which contains the device itself, plus a microUSB cable and a slim user guide. There’s not much to see in the guide, because the product is pretty self-explanatory.
To use, just pop your choice of battery into the adjustable slot, then adjust the contact prongs so they fit properly into the + and – terminals, plug in your USB cable and charging source, and you’re good to go.
We tested the unit out with an Anker USB power block and it worked fine with no fuss. Plugged it in, pressed the on button on the battery block and everything started working nicely. The LED lit up on the CamCaddy 2, with useful details such as the charge time, voltage and a charging indicator, so you could track the progress of the re-charge.
This is the kind of product you really should pop into your camera bag for emergencies. It’s the product you reach for when you’re suddenly out of juice and miles away from your mains charger or a plug socket. Just about everyone has access to a USB power source nowadays, even if it’s just their laptop, so this little tool can make the most of these opportunities when you’re on the go. You can even use it to charge your camera up using a USB solar power source. Very neat.
