From the ‘You heard it here first’ dept.

The Register is reporting that Bango.net and International Wireless are cooperating on software that will allow you to scan product barcodes whilst out shopping with your fancy new digicam smartphone, to receive additional information on the products concerned.

As you may remember the Ferret stumbled across this German company offering just such software for the Nokia 7650 back in February. Expect this kind of service to become massive once technology like this is in place, although I still believe that it will only really take off when the comparative shopping services start using it. Remember the ‘perfect market’ anyone?

Imagine being able to access Kelkoo.com from your mobile phone while inside a Dixons (our Circuit City) store to get a comparison on the price of a mini-disc player. It could re-introduce the whole concept of price haggling in stores – a la Far East – which would be fab, wouldn’t it campers?

More on Bango.net here.
