Bionic Eye Implants – not as cool as science fiction but still spectacular

patients

Bionic eyes are nothing new in science fiction but they weren’t really a reality for our world, until now. In 2017, ten blind people in the UK will be given bionic eyes which will hopefully allow them to see again. The future is now.

First and foremost, this is a trial that is only available to people who have retinitis pigmentosa, an inherited and degenerative disease. These ten people weren’t born blind and at some time in the past, had use of their eyes. The system works with retinal implants that convert images captured on a camera installed in a set of glasses, into electrical pulses and these make their way to the brain. So these aren’t as cool looking as the kind in movies.

They don’t give the wearer super sight, night vision or any of the other neat perks one sees in science fiction. It gives them enough vision to tell if someone has walked away or to read large letters. See lights, that sort of thing which is still pretty amazing. If these trials are successful than the company, Second Sight, may potentially be able to start rolling these out to the general public.

  • Happy that something like this is moving forward successfully. Many of the things we take for granted are such a tremendous gift for others.
