Degrowth – the controversial plan to work less to fight climate change

Growth is good. Growth means more jobs which is great for people who need them but the busier we all are, the more emissions are created. One controversial idea to fight climate change is degrowth. Intentionally reducing work and consumption to low levels to reduce emissions.

The idea is interesting and hearkens back to minimalists concepts. Produce less, buy less, live more simply. It actually sounds great, after all, who doesn’t want more time to spend doing things you REALLY enjoy?

It does have some parts that people may balk at though. In order to work, a country must have robust social services as no one will be making much money to support themselves. This includes transportation and healthcare. There’s also a redistribution of wealth issue. Still, the idea is an interesting one. Check out the article to learn more about it.
