Petroleum and plastic isn’t great. It’s causing us a lot of problems for us. You know what doesn’t cause us a lot of problems? Wood. Wood is great. And now scientists have figured out a way to break down wood in a way that it might replace petroleum.
The process turns wood into two things first. Paper pulp and liquid lignin oil. At this point, it’s just the process of making paper. The oil can be further refined to create substances to rival petroleum while the pulp can be used as biofuel or in other applications.
The resulting compounds are not as harmful to humans which is great and as a bonus, could possible store CO2 like the trees that they came from once did. Could you imagine? Plastic that stores carbon! The environmental cost of such products would also be lower than those made of petroleum which is a win win. The process is still being tested but there is hope in scaling up and creating industry around it.
