Yes that headline says it all really, too many acronyms and not enough time. Well the upshot is that Japanese telco DoCoMo has introduced a new type of hybrid PDA/phone – dubbed a two part wireless terminal. The SH2101 FOMA (FOMA stands for Freedom of Multimedia Access by the way) device comprises a base unit with built in camera, LCD screen and keyboard, with a smaller handset portion that you use to make straightforward calls an’ stuff.
The base unit appears to be about the size of a Psion 5 and the keyboard in the photie looks very capable, so this could be a useful product for the right type of customer. The handset and the base unit communicate by Bluetooth, so you can keep the handset in your case or pocket and in effect use the PDA base as a standalone unit. No word on pricing or whether it will ever be seen outside of Japan.
There are some interesting research papers on mobile phone use – in English – on the DoCoMo site too.
