A backcountry snowboarder’s best survival tool – his snowboard?

Backcountry skiers know the thrills as well as the very real dangers lurking around any corner. Having a GPS transmitter and receiver may not be enough to help keep you alive if you get caught in a serious accident or deadly avalanche.

With that in mind, Signal Snowboards decided to create a unique board that could make the difference. Their Survivor Split Snowboard is part Swiss Army knife, part split board and packs a lot of innovative possibilities that could help save your life if you get caught in tons of heavy snow.

Signal Survivor Split 2

As part of web series Every Third Thursday, Signal Snowboard created a snowboard cum survival kit. They took a traditional splitboard and turned it into three pieces instead of two. The middle piece incorporates a snow shovel inside the board’s natural curve. They then added peripheral gear including a retractable saw blade in one of the skis for cutting firewood, a flint mounted to the side of the snowboard to help start a fire, and a built-in compass and thermometer. The base of the skis are done in bright orange with an SOS sign.

All three pieces fit together to make one nifty snowboard. The 2 outer pieces can fit together without the middle snow shovel piece, to let a smaller, lighter powder surfer have some fun in deep snow. Altogether, this unique snowboard would provide the key elements adventurous might need to survive a potential backcountry disaster.
