A very unusual stay for the night – Shelter ByGG

Shelte Bygg 1

If finding a place to stay that’s unique is something you seek, there are treehouse hotels, an airplane that’s been converted into a hotel, a dockside crane cum luxury hideway, even a classic car-themed hotel. Another offering to the unique, where art and sculpture intertwine, is the Shelter ByGG, a portable shelter installation by Portuguese designer Gabriela Gomes.

This “hotel room” gives a nod to sustainability in that it’s made from 100 percent non-polluting and recycled materials such as cork along with solar roof panels to supply the module with energy.

Gomes’ idea is “converting sculptural objects into design objects”, turning them into products that can be used every day. This fascinating getaway space is a double room with an integrated WC, assuring both comfort and privacy. This temporary space, considered by the artist as a portable “itinerant object,” is currently on display in the center of Guimarães, Portugal. Adventurous guests can make reservations online at Shelter ByGG, with accommodation for two people costing €100 (US$126) for an interesting night’s stay.
