AB Shutter – wireless remote makes it easy to take cool self portrait photos with your phone [Review]

Have you ever been in the situation where you want to take a photograph of the two of you together on vacation, but there’s no-one around to help out? Or you’re trying to grab a cool shot of you in front of that rare Sumatran tiger, but you’re not sure you can trust any nearby stranger to get it right (or not run off with your phone?). Well now there’s a cool solution.

The AB Shutter is a small battery powered remote wireless trigger which can fire the shutter on your smartphone (as long as it’s a Samsung – but see below) from up to 10 meters away. It’s a cinch to use. Just insert the watch batteries into both units, switch on, plug the receiver into the headphone socket of your Galaxy S3, S4, Note 1 or 2 and step back.

Oh, nearly forgot. You’ll need to first install a free 3rd party camera app from the Google Play store called Camera 360 Ultimate, because it lets you fire the camera shutter on your phone via the volume buttons. But once you’ve set that up, all you have to do is press the button on the wireless remote and bingo, one remote photograph captured.

As you can see from our video test below, the device works really well, even from a long distance away, so it’s great for getting the kind of photographs that can be so impressive (think candid shots of pets when they don’t think you’re looking). The only thing we would have liked to have seen is a facility to capture video with the same remote control, because we can really see that being very useful in all sorts of ways. Priced at $16.95.

Note: if you want a similar product for the iPhone, you can try the iSnapx Remote for iOS (below) for $29.95.
