AirPods Are Waste – the wireless earbuds are destined to be trash

AirPods are a product that spawned a million jokes. The wireless earbuds are meant to be convenient but they get lost and broken making them very pricey status symbols. More than that, they become trash in less than two years that can’t be recycled or disposed of. They are an ecological nightmare.

Airpods are made of plastic, electronic components and glue. The lithium batteries die in about 18 months which makes them unusable. They can’t be recycled because they can’t be taken apart safely. If they are actually tossed (which is likely what happens with them) they may cause explosions and fires in landfills but even if they don’t, they’ll just be plastic bits hanging out for many centuries, well after technology and humanity have moved on. Why are we making things like this?

Planned obsolescence is a major issue in the tech industry and it causes major waste. AirPods are a more recent example but continuing to push products that can’t be upgraded, recycled, or reused is just adding to e-waste and that’s a terrible thing.
