Arctic P614 BT Bluetooth Headphones – new budget wireless headphones come with superb sound quality and NFC [Review]

There’s no shortage of headphones vying for our attention nowadays, but most of them fit into two camps. Either they’re super cheap, low specification products, or they’re top end, designer fancy and with a fancy price tag to match. But now the folks at Arctic (who make computer components) have come up with an interesting twist on the budget market, a cool specification list.

Arctic P614BT Headphones feature not only a super low price, but a slew of features which you would only expect to find on higher end products. The headphones themselves offer a pretty basic design, but it’s what’s inside that should get your attention if you’re in the market for a pair of cans for your phone or tablet.

First impressions
The headphones come in a simple but decent quality box, complete with a simple user manual, a USB charge cable and a plastic carrying case which won’t win any awards for style. But it’s functional. The headphones themselves are an interesting size, not too large to make them tricky to carry around, and not too small to impact on sound quality. Check out our video below for an overview of the functionality.

In use
The headphones have a surprisingly good specification for the price, with NFC pairing built in (which makes it a snap to get them connected to an NFC enabled device), as well as an integrated mic for hands-free calling, and Bluetooth 4 aptX support. This last feature gives you CD quality sound from your Bluetooth connection, which can really make a difference between squelchy, crackly sound and crystal clear. It works!

We found the headphones to be surprisingly comfortable in use, in part because they’re nice and light, and also because the spring isn’t too severe on the over head clasp, and the cushions are soft enough to make them easy to wear for decent lengths of time. The battery life is rated at 30 hours per charge, so you’re going to get a good time to wear them in the real world anyway.

The other thing we found was good was the isolation, with the snug fit making for a kind of noise canceling effect, so you can hear your music better. The controls are situation on the right hand earpiece, and they work well, although it takes a bit of getting used to to locate them when you need them. The top feature though is definitely the sound, crystal clear and crackle free. This is Bluetooth as you probably haven’t heard it before.

Conclusion
The new Arctic P614 BT wireless headphones are a surprise in a number of ways, from the low price to the inclusion of the kind of top quality specs we’d expect at a premium price point. They’re solid, good sounding headphones, and while we’re not sure whether the build quality will last as long as high end products from brands such as Sennheiser, we’re confident enough to say that these should be top of the list for anyone on a tight budget who’s looking for a nice sounding set to go with their mobile music needs.

  • Just in case anyone besides me was wondering, that’s $42.99US dollars. There’s also a comparable pair of what seems to be a cheaper version of the same ones for $29.99.
