Red Hull footbridge combines conservation with remarkable style

Footbridges and conservation have gone together for some time. There are footbridges that allow wildlife to safely cross highways and others strictly for two-legged folks. The new River Hull Footbridge, located east of the northern English town of Hull, connects its Old Town conservation area to an industrial space currently undergoing redevelopment. And it does it with a unique style and grace. Designed by the British architectural firm McDowell & Benedetti, this innovative £6.5 million hi-tech footbridge won an international…

OLTU – A great new concept to keep food fresher longer

A recent disturbing statistic says that Americans throw away almost 50 percent of the food they buy. The main reason for this is that food “goes bad” or no longer looks appealing to eat. What’s needed is a better way to store it so that it stays fresher longer. The National Award Winner from Spain of the James Dyson 2013 Award would do just that.   The OLTU, a system that uses the heat generated by refrigerators and uses the…

Could space junk become a thing of the past?

More than 16,000 pieces of “space junk” currently orbit the Earth. This debris includes non-functioning satellites and burned-off pieces from former space flights. Satellites tend to cluster in similar orbits and pose serious threats to space faring technology as well as to the International Space Station. This may become a thing of the past due to a partnership that’s been announced between the Ecole polytechnique federale de Lausanne (EPFL) and Swiss Space Systems (S3) to launch the CleanSpace One satellite…

The Nube transforms a hammock into a covered shelter

Even though summer is over, there’s plenty of great camping weather still to come. Finding a way to keep yourself and your gear covered when needed is a great plus. The Nube (pronounced “new-bay”), from Sierra Madre Research, attaches to any camping hammock and turns it into an enclosed shelter. A series of suspension lines connect to surrounding trees and the ground keep the top waterproof layer taut, creating a barrier against wind and rain. If no trees are available,…

Canadian researchers say water can help boost energy efficiency in buildings

Scientists are constantly seeking new and innovative ways to increase energy efficiency for buildings. Researchers at the University of Toronto announced they’ve found a way to do this by fitting window panes with tiny channels of water. Inspired by vascular systems in nature including the network of blood vessels in the human body, they say these channels will help cool a building 7º to 9º C in the summer and reduce heat loss during winter. The thin cooling layer is…

Fitting easily into a cupboard or against a wall, it recycles wastewater from baths, showers and some sinks and uses it to flush toilets. It can also extract heat…
