AutoVox M6 Dashcam Mirror – cool touchscreen recorder for the car [Review]

You know things are getting weird when the accessories in your car are more sophisticated than your original desktop computer, and that’s no joke. We’ve now got to the stage where a humble rear view mirror can ship with a touchscreen and camera combo which would put DELL to shame. Welcome to the future.

The AutoVox M6 Dashcam Mirror not only features a high definition, low light front facing camera, but also comes with a snazzy stick on rearview camera which you can retro fit to give you some safe reversing smarts on the cheap. No need to install expensive kits, when this one does it all. We didn’t get to check out the rearview part, but as you’ll see from our review video, the product definitely is a step up from the earlier generation of dashcam mirrors that we have reviewed.

The kit is remarkably easy to fit in a couple of minutes, although you will need to know your way around to install the wiring discretely around the vehicle, and we wouldn’t recommend you do the rearview camera install unless yourself, better for a professional. Despite that, you can easily get the main unit up and running, and it’s basically all set up out of the box.

The video quality is great at 1080P (see samples in the video above) and the main difference apart from the touchscreen controls, which make things a lot easier, is the fact that the night time images are also excellent. Earlier models we’ve looked at struggled in the dark, but not the M6. Apart from that you get all the usual bells and whistles, including loop recording, parking monitoring (provided you have your power source on all the time!) and video lock for manually selecting clips you don’t want over-written by the loop.

A very nice unit indeed. In previous products we noticed at times some interference with on-board audio systems, but this M6 doesn’t have any issues, and we cannot really fault the product build quality either. The only thing missing is a GPS stamp feature, but to be honest we suspect that most people won’t bother with that stuff anyway, so it’s not a big deal. Nice kit.
