Avenza Maps – use your phone for maps, even without internet

Having a map in your pocket is awesome but when you’re outside of any place that gets cell coverage you may find yourself really, really lost, unless you have a physical, paper map that is. Avena Maps is the app that gives you a paper map, right on your digital device.

This app is geared for people who like to go off the beaten path, in some cases quite literally. Even with the prevalence of GPS and cellular technology, there are still places where you simply don’t get service and with no internet, that means no maps. Avenza solves giving you the option to download a full map, to use offline.

The real beauty is that it uses your phone’s GPS functions so that you can plot and record where you are as you move about. Perfect for people who are having an outdoor adventure. The app is free but the maps themselves must be purchased. They’re available for locations all around the world and some are for as low as 99 cents. If you’re planning to go off grid, check out Avenza Maps so you can find your way back when you’re ready.

  • I use Polaris, which sounds similar but allows four or five different types of map – vector-drawn, satellite, topological, and US Geological Survey Topo Maps (the last is way cool).

    • Thanks for the tip! Having options is always a good thing.
