Avidemux – multi-format video editing and creation freeware

Avidemux is an open source, lightweight, video editing program with a surprising list of features. It reads most common types of video files; .avi, .mp1, .mp2, .mp4, .asf, .flv, .mov and more using a wide variety of codecs. You can do all the standard video editing things like cutting, splicing and so on in the familiar timeline-based linear editing layout as well as apply filters to fix video problems, sharpen images, import digital photos and resize video. Avidemux goes a little further and allows you to crop the video as well as resize it.

There’s also a neat feature that allows you to encode a video to make it fit into a specific file size. Very handy if you need to squeeze a four hour video of little Johnny’s school play onto one CD instead of four. As well as opening pretty much any video, Avidemux will let you save video in almost any format, with the exception of DivX, which it can read but not save. It’s available for download for Linux, PC and Mac.

Avidemux is a free video editor designed for simple cutting, filtering and encoding tasks. It supports many file types, including AVI, DVD compatible MPEG files, MP4 and ASF, using a variety of codecs. Tasks can be automated using projects, job queue and powerful scripting capabilities.
