Best Buy drops 15% restocking fee

If you’ve ever purchased a laptop, video camera, GPS or other high-ticket item from Best Buy, you’ve probably noticed that yellow sticker warning you of their 15% restocking fee. What this means is that if you open the item and try to return it, you’ll only get 85% of your money refunded to you. This is done to cover the fact that they drop the price for open-box items. It’s also no doubt done to keep returns to a minimum. So why am I blathering on about this today? Because it seems that the company has had a change of heart and removed the restocking fee altogether.

That’s right, if you receive a shiny new GPS for Christmas and it doesn’t work quite as well as you’d hoped, you can get a full refund on the device (with a receipt, of course). If you happened to return something and took that 15% hit within the last month (since November 17th, to be precise) the company will even refund you that extra bit that they held back. How about that for customer service?
