As more consumers make the shift to greener lifestyles, products that are clearly landfill fodder stand out. Single use coffee pods are a good example. Americans consume 400 million cups of coffee every day. That’s over 146 billion cups annually. The company Reduce, Reuse Grow’s new biodegradable coffee cup aims to educate consumers and change their coffee brewing habits.
Not only is this a better solution that trying to find ways to recycle single use coffee pods – which often end up in landfills anyway – but these innovative cups have seeds embedded in them. They let coffee lovers enjoy their brew then select a perfect spot to plant one of a range of beautiful flowers or native tree species.
The company is currently testing manufacturing processes and native seeds. They’re launching their first round of compostable packaging products with the program “Buy a Cup, Grow a Plant” in San Luis Obispo, California. Plans are to expand to other major California cities, as well as Denver and Seattle. The company’s motto is “setting out to change the way consumers perceive the value and use of their trash.” By offering beauty and caffeine, it’s a truly winning combination.
Even better if you don’t manufacture waste in the first place.
